Wenqi Tan

About me

I am currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney in the Discipline of Media and Communications and recipient of the University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Postgraduate Research Scholarship. I am also recipient of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Graduate Research Fellowship.

I received my Master of Communication Studies (Research) and Bachelor of Communication Studies (Honours) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

I research disability, inclusion, and technology.

My PhD thesis interrogates the praxis and ideologies of disability inclusion in social virtual reality. I push back against the techno-optimistic and technoableist sentiments that often inhabit (social) VR discourse, and instead explore how social VR can be radically and meaningfully inclusive if thought about from and with disability.

My other projects include my Master's thesis on the inclusion of people with ambulatory disability and older adults in autonomous public transport; on digital inclusion in Singapore; on disability representation in video games; and on refugees with disability's sense of welcome and belonging in Australia.
